Civility, from a historic perspective

Fundamentally, civility is an ethic for relating to a stranger. The historic context of western courtesy, and civility emerged as a nascent social contract during Europe’s Middle -Ages; however, its origins were less about mutual considerations and more about maintaining rigid delineation between individual groups representing differing power sources such as military, social prestige, and wealth.
