Learning the Ancient Latin Language

In this introductory language course, we shall explore the elementary and basic foundations of the ancient Latin language, discuss the importance of studying and indulging in the pleasures of a "useless" or "dead" language, and practice applying the ancient Latin language in our everyday lives. Hopefully, by the end of the course, you will have found a newfound appreciation for the ancient language and will be able to approach the subject with more confidence, and, just maybe, find new roads that lead you to the wonders of ancient Rome and a "useless" tongue.

Expanded Course Description:

Map your way through the ruins of the ancient Latin language during the course by investigating where the language could be applied to your life and by following along with the course exercises in the course workbook. For instance, do any of the example phrases in the course apply to you? Finish the course project by stringing together a few sentences or phrases in Latin that you can confidently write, say, and understand grammatically at a basic level. Remember Rome was not built in a day!

Course Project Outline/Tasks:

• Take Notes: Pay attention to keywords or phrases mentioned in the course.

• Put it to Action: Practice with all in-course exercises (follow along with course workbook).

• Take it Slow: Review grammar principles and go back if needed.

• Practice, Practice, Practice: Practice writing and speaking in basic Latin, and share your newly gained knowledge with friends and family!

• Warning Advisory: Do not be afraid to look for words and structures beyond the course content and workbook (such as in online Latin dictionaries or databases); however, Latin grammar can become extremely challenging very quickly so, if you are feeling overwhelmed, try to stick with course content vocabulary and basic grammatical structures.

• Project & Course Challenge: Construct a paragraph in Latin providing a self-introduction or any generic paragraph that you can string together ~ 4-6 sentences (or more if you're feeling bold). Can you read it out loud? Do not hesitate to share your creation even if you think it isn't perfect or correct! Have fun!
