Law School: Learn to Think Like a Lawyer

This series of classes is designed to teach future private business entrepreneurs, and other interested parties, how the system of law works as a whole. Once the student comes to understand the separate disciplines, they will be better prepared to learn how to organize their thought process and, ultimately, learn how to think like a lawyer. While the information provided in law school takes years  of study and is designed to make students professional experts in each of the disciplines of law, these classes are designed only to briefly discuss the various doctrines of law with the goal of teaching students how to structure their thought process, to learn how to balance utility versus risks, and thus, learn to think like a lawyer.

• Tort law - The study of intentional wrongs, negligence and strict liability.

• Criminal law - The study of crimes against persons and property and the elements of culpability;

• Trusts - The study of contractual agreements to distribute property;

• Probate - The study of the process of how post-mortem is distributed by the court and, how such cases advance through the court system.

Just out of curiosity I decided to see how much law school now costs. I was astonished to find that the prices ranged from $131,000 to $151,000 for typical American law schools. I then looked up the costs of online law schools. I found that there are no online law schools that are accredited by the American Bar Association. However, I did find online law schools that offer a Juris Doctor degree, although that degree will not qualify you to sit for BAR exams in any state. The lowest costing online law program I could find was $47,000 and offers an, "Executive Juris Doctor" degree.

I graduated from a California state accredited law school (Southern California Institute of Law) with a Juris Doctor degree. The basic requirement to teach in any law school is either an L.L.B. degree or a Juris Doctor degree. Although I retired as a private entrepreneur several years ago, I have decided that I can teach everything a person would learn in law school. My delivery may not be as eloquent and I am not be a distinguished professor of law with decades of teaching experience. However, the information is the same, regardless of whether that information comes from the halls of Harvard Law School or The Bohemian School of Law. It's the same information.

When I was a law student, I worked as a law clerk for the Ventura County Public Defender's Office and I clerked for a well known Ventura/Los Angeles attorney. After graduating from law school in 1991, I decided that I'd prefer to work for myself. I spent much of my career as a freelance writer, newspaper reporter and running my own ornamental horticulture nursery business. Most recently I was a private contractor for a Japanese international trading firm researching new markets in southeast Asia. I presently live in Bangkok, Thailand.

One of the first things I learned in law school was that, when it comes to liability, you're held to the standard of expertise that you hold yourself out to have. I want to make it perfectly clear that, although I have never taught in a law school. For that reason I did not decide to name my law school, The Braughthington Manor School of Law or, The Windsor-Chapman School of Law. I decided that if I'm going to hold myself out to the standard of my personal expertise, I should call my institution, The Bohemian School of Law.  I am an artist, a musician, a writer and I generally live an alternative lifestyle.

The information I provide is generic information that is available online  and is in the public domain (CCBY-SA 3.0). My flagship class is titled, Law School: Learn to Think Like a Lawyer. This class on tort law is a free sample of what I teach and how I teach. I take a laid-back approach and want students to feel that they have the capacity to study law. The study of law is not easy, however, it can be invigorating. The study of law also builds character and self confidence. I hope find this class intriguing and decide to take my main course.  Please understand that just because a series of law courses is inexpensive and derived from online, it's still  the same information, just $46,899 cheaper than my nearest competitor. BTW, if you want an Executive Juris Doctor degree from an online school that you can proudly hang on your wall, I've got some crayons! Namaste.
