-The purpose of cutting tool material is to remove metal under controlled conditions. Thus the tool material should be harder than the material which is to be cut .

Cubic Boron Nitride(CBN)

-The cutting tool material should possesses following requirements :
It should be strong enough to withstand the forces being applied due to cutting
It should be tough (resistant to shock)
It should be harder than material
It should be able to resist high temperature
It should be capable of withstand the sudden cooling effect
The coefficient of friction between the chip and tool should be low as possible
It should be easily formed to the required cutting shape
classification of tool:
Depending upon the number of edges there are two types
-Single point cutting tool-it has only one effective cutting edge and remove the excess material from work piece
Ex. Turning tools, Shaping tolos,Slotting tools, Boring tools
-Multipoint cutting tool-They have more than one effective cutting edge and remove the excess material from work piece
Ex. milling cutters, broaching cutters,Hobs,gear shaping cutters
