Green Buildings and Ozone Protection

Ozone depleting substances (ODS) are used in refrigeration, air conditioning, building insulation and fire fighting equipment in buildings. HCFCs which are currently in use are schedule to be phased out by 2030 for developed countries and 2040 for developing countries. The newer ozone friendly alternatives are potent greenhouse gases that are a threat to climate change. Thus, the solution to ozone protection is becoming a problem for climate change.

The course shows how selecting zero-ODP and low-GWP alternatives is the way forward to achieve environmental benefits in an integrated manner. A significant amount of new building stock being added in the developing countries have a huge potential to use such low-GWP refrigerants and natural alternatives. This course brings out the fact that energy efficient buildings and equipment are key to reduce the demand for refrigerants, consequently reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

The course is designed in modules beginning with fundamentals ozone depletion and ODS. The subsequent modules will cover building specific details such as how are ODS used in buildings and how they can be phased out.
