This is one of my favourite images to draw. Since a young age, I have been obsessed with drawing eyes and I think a lot of people would feel the same. Eyes are so beautiful, no matter who owns them, so we wanted to show you how you could become an eye artist too!
Throughout this series, we look at breaking down the process into bite-sized, manageable chunks of drawing. We take it slowly and introduce one piece of detail at a time.
Stage 1
The Outline
Before we begin we need to understand the facial features and how light falls onto the face and into the eye, in order to think about what our next steps are. Once we understand, we can then begin to form the outline shape of the eye.
Stage 2
The Dark Bits
In this lesson, we will look at the darkest areas including the pupil and iris and look at how the darkness of this can influence its surroundings. Once we have this set, we are able to judge the other values of the drawing much more accurately.
Stage 3
Refine & Define
In this lesson, we start to shade the skin on the upper half of the lid and I show you how to refine the image using the 2H pencil to help bring the drawing together. It helps to soften the skin and fill in the gaps where the paper is showing up.
Stage 4
Lower Lid
Here we look at how to define the soft edges in the lower lid and we would look at how we can tackle the wrinkles. Be careful not to make them too dark! You could age her.
Stage 5
Eyeball
Let's look at the whites of the eyes and see how white it actually is. We go into greater detail to define this and show you how far from white the ball really is.
Stage 6
Iris / Pupil
The moment you have been waiting for! In this lesson, we look at how to tackle the strands in the pupil and make the most of the detail that we can see. We look at the reflection and add the eyelashes to really give it that realistic look.
Stage 7
Eyelashes
Possibly the most defining moment for any eye drawing, the eyelashes. We explore the genuine shape of the lashes and see how we can place these on the drawing. No more spiders legs.
Stage 8
Final Bits
For the final part of the drawing, we revisit the refining stage and out the final touches on the drawing so that you can see how we bring the eye even more to life. A little darker here, a little lighter then and boom, we have ourselves a beautiful realistic eye.
