ACTIVE AND PASSIVE VOICE: A sentence is written in active voice when the subject of the sentence is performing the action. A sentence is written in the passive voice when the subject of the sentence has something done to it by someone or something

DIRECT AND INDIRECT SPEECH: Direct speech describes when something is being repeated exactly as it was – usually in between a pair of inverted commas. The indirect speech will still share the same information – but instead of expressing someone’s comments or speech by directly repeating them, it involves reporting or describing what was said. An obvious difference is that with indirect speech, you won’t use inverted commas.

SENTENCE IMPROVEMENT:

  • In sentence improvement questions a sentence is given with a word or phrase in bold letters.

  • Four substitutes are given under the sentence as alternatives.

  • The candidate has to find the error in the part that is in bold. Then find the correct answer from among the alternatives.

  • After substituting the alternative the sentence becomes grammatically correct.

  • If the given sentence is correct and no substitute is required then the answer is “No Improvement.”

RECONSTRUCTION OF SENTENCES: In Reconstruction of Sentence questions, you are given the first and last parts of a sentence. The rest of the sentence is broken into four sections named (P), (Q), (R) and (S). You are required to arrange these parts to shape a complete important sentence and after that pick the right combination.

IDIOMS AND PHRASE: An idiom is a phrase or expression that typically presents a figurative, non-literal meaning attached to the phrase; but some phrases become figurative idioms while retaining the literal meaning of the phrase. Categorized as formulaic language, an idiom's figurative meaning is different from the literal meaning.

ONE WORD SUBSTITUTION: One word Substitution is one of the integral parts of vocabulary. It simply means that a sentence has to be replaced with a single word. This area requires a good vocabulary to solve the questions well.

Questions based on one word substitution are often asked in various competitive exams and academic exams.

THE CORRECTLY SPELT WORD: Good spelling facilitates communication. By following the same rules for spelling words, we can all understand the text we read. Comprehension: good spelling avoids confusion. If you write with intent and proper spelling, the receiver of that text will understand it.

ANTONYMS AND SYNONYMS: Antonyms are words with opposite meanings. Synonyms are words with the same or similar meaning. Homonyms are words that are spelled and pronounced the same but have different meanings. Slowly but surely, we can help our kids overcome vocabulary and spelling challenges.
