We first add the basic wash leaving the highlights as white bare paper. The magic slowly happens as we start darkening the hues. In the last layer which is the third layer the flowers start popping out of the page.

My attempt has been to explain to you how and why the prayer basket is made - the significance of the symbolism of the placement of the flowers and leaves. For example the red flowers are placed in the south as a homage to one of the trimurti gods. The with the cultural significance, there develops an attachment to paint this subject matter. I hope my students feel that and that is what I attempt to do.

As bonus I have also added how to paint t eh quaint rice packets made of strips of banana leaves and woven to make these intricate baskets. These are used during the Hari Raya festival and is considered a celebratory food. The banana leaves give the rice a nice fragrant taste.
