Airline Transport Pilots Licence.

After CPL and multi engine endorsements… Again get admitted into the same flying school or a different if you prefer… Attend classes for ATPL theories or just complete the ATPL theory papers on your own. After passing in those exams you’ll obtain a “Frozen ATPL license”. Then build your hours satisfying the needs asked by DGCA to fulfil its prerequisites for “Unfrozen ATPL license.

You can also fly for an airline by joining them after selection process under Fresh CPL category or Type Rated category or Non-Type Rated Category. But you’ll have to obtain a ATPL license by completing theories and achieving an unfrozen ATPL license after 1500 hrs. Inability will lead to lay off or dismissal from airline or sometimes if the airline’s policy is flexible they’ll let you continue as First Officer or Co-Pilot till the end, as the DGCA clearly states if one wants to be a PIC of an aeroplane without supervision they must have an Unfrozen ATPL under their cap.

But in daily life as an airline captain, I think most of the effort is involved in managing all the people in the crew and the airline and ATC so that we can stay safe. Once we’re underway, it’s about compliance with the rules and regs, making good long term decisions and encouraging the flight crew to speak up and keep you informed about what they’re thinking and correcting my mistakes and misunderstandings. The mind is mostly on the management of the flight and less on the manipulation of the controls.

I think if you have enough bananas, you can teach a monkey to land a 737 in a crosswind. That’s not really the problem. It’s more about landing the 737 in a crosswind after conducting the flight in a way that maximizes safety and comfort of the passengers.

Like any management job, there are a lot of competing interests and it’s up to you to work with the crew to evaluate the situation and to get the crew to support a good decision. There’s always something new and with the help of the crew, we always figure it out.
